  • JOHN SINCLAIR & SHARING COUNTER-CULTURE

The epic & encyclopedic – back catalogue – of music and writings from John Sinclair, will soon be available for – digital download – and SHARED’ availability. Many of his works have been tragically lost, to both personal and national disasters of one kind or another; other works have been miss-placed and kept in storage for a long long time, and, like any other great archeological anthropological discovery from the African heartlands – the opening of the JOHN SINCLAIR archives and vaults provides a rich resource of counter-cultural gems and treasures, useful feedback for all humanity to process.

So, i thought i could contribute a little something in the way of a hyperlinked guide to John Sinclair in cyberspace, and the places and spaces you can find his footprints and fresh air. I will also begin the work on his recommended reading/listening list from the back of GUITAR ARMY.

“John Sinclair is a huge lover with masses of curly black hair flowing all over his head and shoulders. . . He and his White Panther brothers and sisters from Ann Arbor, Michigan are the most alive force in the whole Midwest. They turn on thousands of kids each week to their own beauty and build them into warriors and artists of the new Nation. . . For this some bald-headed judge named Columbo sentenced John Sinclair to nine-and-a-half to ten years in the penitentiary at Jackson, Michigan.”

BIMHUIS. PIET HEINKADE 3. AMSTERDAM. http://www.bimhuis.com/
Timucin Sahin, Kai Eckhardt, AND Owen Hart JR. Grew me a nice new set of ears at the Badcuyp, Amsterdam in 2007. So i returned to witness the spacetime technician’s once more, this time at the Bimhuis with his new line up. Out the gate, out the traps, launch, go, straight off i felt i was in the right place for the evening, Timucin weaving his subtle cosmic tones and background radiation with a truly awesome flurry of fingered equations, while Tyshawn instantly abducted my ears to at least 9 simultaneous rhythm patterns, fluxt timespace signatures and all the accent and groove-feel to pull out the lilt and swing of the different junctions, at the phalanx of – intersection points – in the Plutonium jazzy-gass, splitting ears and brain-body barriers with the aroma of no-time, new time. All punching time on the chin. In a nutshell, i felt abducted by the soundscape, and the grooves satisfied by own personal glittered-jazz, drum and bass/jungle tinged taste buds like a well aged Sativa. Mwah! The show in 07 was a trio of sonic magicians, and so Timucin had all the upper register and midrange amidst Owen’s intelligent drum orbits, last night however John O’Gallagher was very much with Timucin – up there – and for me pulled out, and defined like a sharp pencil line; the intricate and beatiful pan-modal Astro-neuro attainments being shared, freely with the Audience. Thomas Morgan moved with the flow and ebb of the swirling vortex, his bass talking the talk and walking up the stairs to Jupiter, Saturn and other planets that seem under investigation by the tribe of timespice engineers and sonic-fiction poets. The undertones and light whispering voices emanating from Time-munchin’s calculations continue to crop up in all the right places for me, the quantum jumping compositions unveiling layer after layer of timespace, like an audio fabrige egg, with each new layer and complete new groove, feel and seemingly mode, to my ears. Now on fire, little flames symboling the tiny hairs in my ears, travelling and movement, verbs and echoes of just past places, remixed live, and brought back again, back to front, in the flickr of an eye or two. And when you think your used to the jumping around and technicolor sheets of sound, Tyshawn introduces another hot pepper, BANG BOOM,

Slamming, out of nowhere, then caress, then hyperbolic jungle-jazz-swing, then a stunning trip hop flex, all comfortable and innovative at each turn, playing snare with a bottle of water, rolling it across the snare getting the plastic crackle and fizz, then twizzling the bottled water through the space just above his set, between the two overhead mics, creating further mysterious sounding artcore entertainment, symbolic gesture, in short, Tyshawn owned everything he touched, my ears and everyone else’s. Abducted by 10’000 variations on the 8 or 9 breakbeats i danced and lost my mind to in the dancehalls of Britain many years ago, which left a trace, picked up again tonight in the hardcore Drum and Bass and Sax and Guitar wisdom language. Like some of the writing of James Joyce, or Finnegans Wake, by the end of the show the 4 had put the Universe back together again, but in a whole different way using music and human ears and brains to their maximal potential, follow this! You dig! Now the street traffic sounds different to me after the show, percussive shards and trace fragments follow me out the Bimhius and down the Damrak, and the clatter of the trams is building something, i am waiting for the next launch date of Timucin (time-munching) to help me put the Universe together again and witness the tearing down, reconstructing and rebuilding of the life of the mind, or the life of the mind as i see it in 2008, fragmented times, bits and pieces and all culture and languages sirred up, whisked and baked into things, soundbites of the 21st century and all those bits and Bobs that have come before, and, i might add, the sense of the things of the future, included. In the sense of spaceways to other worlds, in the sense that vibration and Astro-Neuro attenuation through cosmic tones for cosmic culture, is out there for your to be a part of, if you can listen and trane your earwiggs. The snowballing angular turns and switching sequence puzzles ride. Together on the crest of the wave of expanding Universes, musical red shifting, and counterpointing, intersecting and jump-back assaulting of the equation. The collective whirring and mixing of pattern, rhythm, and polytonal, multiphonics flashes through the sounds spectrum in dashes and stoccato flashes, bewildering pace, slow and fast and everytime inbetween, always inbetween. Through and beyond my own comprehension, and then once more, your abducted again, sucked through a Noh-Wave Wormhole and brought home to your seat, at the show, clapping but keeping very still, but inside your wanting to dive off the roof into the cold Dutch waters below, something, to exstinguish the fires and flares started in my ears by these cats.
I hope you get to hear this group soon, too. Get some new ears for the holiday season. New music and new ways of hearing it, Timucin and his band of spacetime explorers, gathering the limbs and languages of outer-planetary entities, i like to think. How else can i put it, i was moved in new ways.

Messages from other galaxies and starbursts.
    Gravitationally bound systems of fate
Dragged me to the gig like bossy Angels.
I soon lost myself to the music though…

    Steaming passions, omni-directional forces
Multi layered timbre, time, freedom freedom
Star clusters, and various interstellar clouds
How to bring it back? it back again?

    Dark Strumming from Workman,
Blowing of shaman pipes, Tibetan sounding bells and
His bow, sawing at the wound strings of his Double Bass.
    Searching, always looking,
The Trio Trio Trio questioning everything
    Peculiar galaxies, unknown species,
    Starbursts, dark matter matters.

The spirit of American music, peering into the void,
Pop was excommunicated this Halloween in Europe.

Gathered on samhain between nothingness & eternity.
    Transformed into 3 Wizards constructing
    nNon-Euclidean Jazz Magic, Mystery, ambiguity,
    An awakening, masterfully crafted.
    Perfect.

Saxes are hurtling into way way deep into Milky space,
Oliver Lake, with the figure of a mighty Morpheus
He serves up Red Pill after Red Pill into strange nebulae
Journey after Journey, painting the Matrix Ultra violet
A precise hurricane, rapid fire scatting Knu new new
Anti-jazz language, as Dolphy, Trane, Ornette, Sonny, Pharoah.
Popping Valve sounds like Dolphin chatter, water tight.
Then a Jungle of tone erupts, hundreds of new tone-species
Chattering,. spirits on the side of samhain
All clambering to get in on this Jam.

Andy Cyrille drums form a sound/light-house
Past Alpha proxima, towards a ring galaxy,
Seemingly able to jump quarter/half/ and full bars
Ahead or behind the isolated pulse, in an instant.
Then as if the spirits had conversed long enough
Wrestled long enough and become restless and slipped
    Into hypertravel.

On the side, an Anthem of Zigzag’d melody
Accompanied by a seductive Swing, juicy roasting
Roller coaster swing, syrup sprinkled with interstellar dust,
Snap! Purrrrl purrrrl Snapta ta tata purrrrl.
Snap! One massive cracking hit! Snap! once more.
One Louder than the millions of shuffling feet of the beats
Held with Andy’s left hand wand alone, his right meanwhile
Poking spells and open clusters into the alloyed cymbal
With a big “K” on it. A significant Free-jazz Doppler shift swing.

I experienced many moments of Epiphany during the show
Shattered thoughts coming together personal stuff
Getting worked out by these Chirping shaman-doctors
With the sonic Andromedae ambrosia i love so much.
Seeing their most Humble and graceful postures,
Hearing very few WORDS, and those that came were almost
A whisper. Humble. Concise. Humble Informational.

I had much gratitude for the players,
    American Peacemakers, real American peacemakers
Here in Europe and roaming the transtemporal Omniverse.
Here now to save the Universe again, and tonight
Here in Amsterdam on samhain, again and again.
They did more than that though,
The Trio transfigured time/space for all of us.
There was JuJu spirit in the air, impressions of cyclic minds
Workman’s hands of plasma tonight, over the Big wooden
Clef leaving no note left behind like an Octopus.
    Composure of an Aura murmur.

A Super Nova birth, slapping, thumping Post Drum ‘N Bass
Post all and nothing, this Trio Trio Trio questioning every
    Beat, Fast forwarding language computers,
    Under masterful control controlling toms.
Everywitch way, every side, globular cluster jazz.
Free. Anti-Pop. Wordless. Epic. And all that.

Andy switches to brushes., suddenly everybody rushes
And rushes and keeps streaming for some future destination
Divisions and divisions, sub divisions, crushing music theory
Smashing every genre, busting walls of sound, and re-building
From a subterranean dreamscape somewhere in Asia Major,

Palaces of fuzzy delicate crystal sculptures,
Creatures chirp from inside them just hatching in proto-song.
Breathing pulses, spinning off like asteroids after a collision
Now a Zoo, different animals calling, insects, mammals,
Strange fish and of course, birds.

Talking, talking in varied angular velocities
Getting through, like a fax machine signal, or a kind of rolling codex, Sheets of sound, phase shifts, whispering ghosts
Building sonic keys signitures with Layers of rhythm,
Layers of timbre, propagation pattern. Pattern,
Turning transparent like giant molecular clouds of Tao.
    You build the melody now.
    You do it!

The Trio of spacemen, all artificer, mechanic, craftsman,
True American peacemakers , afro-black Futurist Tempunauts,
Carrying the Legacy of the mighty Atom Smasher himself
Workman alone played with Art Blakey, Kenny Burrel
Roy Ayers, Grant Green, Freddie Hubbard, Eric Dolphy
Herbie Mann (R.I.P) Yusef Lateef, Alice and John
Coltrane. The Masters of the Masters of Jazz
    Anywhere and Everywhere, and forever.

And so i sing lofty praise in eleven sharps
Love’s still alive and with us, the music lives and loves.
And these cats play their music wherever it takes them
Still today, innovating, improvising, everywitch way,
This jazz moves to a place of chaos until the love
Deep Within the music, deep within outer space suddenly
Brings us back to the earth again, Big bang!
    And some healing ritualistic
Post-Bop starts up. Hear! Calls! Everywhair!

Waltz on the surface, dark undercurrents, tension-filled
Cluster fucks of jamming snake rattle jazz,
Soaring high movements of proto-galactic sax compositions,
Entire tunes in several seconds, scales, keys,
Rhythms, poked and screwed and pampered and peppered
A Frenzy of light and dark forces battling
A supercluster scale death match march at mach 4.
Ping Ting of Alloy hats to deep Bass Bass Burrr.
Tap Dancing polyrhythms, self replicating phrases
With rapidly descending intervals between phrases
Phase shifts, sonic booms, scrapping phrases
    Scratching, hooting,
Pitter patter, hair whisper, blow, pop.

Wood, steel, brass, reed, through air meeting
Bio-electric interacting humans conduits into space
Mmuscles, tendons, Lungs, lips, fingers, feet:
Code breaking reality, trcik after trick aftrer trick
After treat after treat after beat.
At least temporarily, off off into deep space/time,
    And back.
