Using AI for Countercultural Art and Global Transformation with Steve Fly

Steve Fly: The latest iteration of my quarter-century (and counting) of research into Robert Anton Wilson’s Tale of the Tribe is a collaboration using some AI tools. Tale of The Tribe is a mountain range whose size and scope requires training to traverse, hill-climbing toward coherence. So far I’ve produced over 65 stanzas with corresponding audio. The first iteration is structured on 60 stanzas to represent the 60 vertices of the Buckminsterfullerene. This is prompted from a line in Ezra Pound’s Cantos “buckie has gone in for structure.” The structure of the poem/album is a tribute to Buckminster Fuller, whom RAW admired and studied with, and it snugly sits as one of the 13 primary inspirations in the way RAW conceived/perceived the universe.

    Chapel perilous review

Chapel Perilous: The Life and Thought Crimes of Robert Anton Wilson

By Gabriel Kennedy a.k.a Prop Anon.

Meticulous research, in depth interviews and his own blood sweat and tears make this book burst with primary sourced materials. Prop met and interviewed Wilson, and studied under his wings at the Maybe Logic Academy 2004-2007. Prop has read and processed everything Wilson published, and done a great service to humanity in discovering and compiling many unpublished materials and eclipsed details.

This human story of integrity and the honest pursuit of the facts, no matter where they lead him is brave and honorable. Remaining forgiving and compassionate, RAW fans already feel this intuitively, now we have words and evidence to bolster those big feels. This book helps encapsulate and buffer that sense that now’s the time, the time to activate and put into practice what RAW communicated. Find and develope your own style. Nurture your own voice. Find the others. All that jazz.

Both a clear introduction to his work, and a wellspring of fat facts for the RAW heads, this book can change your life, if you want it?

The work has helped cement my suspicion that RAW and his works present a road map, or a pathway or network of pathways, for all around the world humanity to thrive, relatively peacefully. A universal, fair and equal and sane vision for planetwide cooperation, physical and mental health and sufficient tolerance, that which is expressed by Charlie Chaplin (Perilous) in his famous speech from The Great Dictator (1940)

Four quotations from the book, for a lil’ flava’

“you are hereby invited to join the most powerful, unscrupulous, dangerous, and mind-blowing non-existent secret society in the world, the Bavarian Illuminati (a front for the even more powerful and non-existent, POEE.) –CP, pg. 86.

Wilson was in D.C. that day with all the other hippies, Yippies, and freaks; walking past a chanting Ed Sanders who was standing on the back of a flatbed truck shouting, “Out demon, out!” towards the Pentagon.–CP, pg. 80.

In a May Day letter, he told Leary, “I am developing a system of consciousness-expansion based on Lilly, yourself, Masters–Houston, Crowley, Gurdjieff, traditional Wiccadom…In my vain moments I think I have something quicker and easier than either traditional magick or modern psychology.”–CP, pg. 115.

Cosmic Trigger Vol. 1 can now be named as the first popular non-fiction book to present the experiments that eventually earned John Clauser and Alain Aspect the 2022 Nobel Prize in Physics.118 It was also the first popular book, according to Alan Moore, the British comic book genius and magician, to properly contextualize Thelema in a language that was accessible and fun. As if that wasn’t enough, Wilson’s book was also the first to present his and Leary’s 8-Circuit model of intelligence, and, according to Richard Metzger, the first to popularize the McKenna brothers Terrence and Dennis’s Timewave Zero Theory after their own The Invisible Landscape (1974).–CP, pg. 131.

I could go on quoting what I consider the evidence for both Wilson’s genius and the importance of this new biography in it’s carefully paced introduction to the facts.

Self evidently, as the saying goes, if it does not make you laugh its probably not true, or, gods can be recognized by their cheerfulness. Through all the struggle, rejection and physical discomfort, Wilson kept his integrity and generally maintained his hilaritas, his cheerfulness, optimism and kindness (expressed by experiential and experimental understanding) toward all sentient beings.

As a super fan of Wilson and his works, I’m naturally biased in my urgent recommendation to read this book, and support the author for his heroic biography. A labour of love. I have followed the long road, and the authors own struggle to get this book completed and published. Writing a book such as this, who’s subject is widly regarded as one of the brightest minds of a generation, requires a laser like focus, and decades deep full immersion in the subjects work. As noted, Wilson gets the biographer he deserves in Prop Anon. Walking the walk and talking the talk, and writing the writ. Get it in your soul.

Turn all that what might have been, what could have and should have been done, into action, into process. Do it. Make it knew. Walk tall.

  • Bruce Sterling On The Great AI Beast

I’ve been a fan of Bruce Sterling since seeing his improvised presentation at the PlanetWorkers Conference, held at the Presidio in San Francisco, 2000. 23 years later his mixture of cookie-cutting-edge prose and technical translation get to the deep monstrous heart of the matter. I’m sure Bruce is aware of the supercomputer called The Great Beast GWB-666 from “Schrodinger’s Cat Trilogy” by Robert Anton Wilson.

But those “parrots” are also AI mythic beasts—parrots with a trillion dimensions. It’s as if that “dead parrot” in the legendary Monty Python sketch could take your job, or burst right out of the BBC-TV screen like a blazing phoenix and eat the television signal. Those parrots are dynamite!

    Bruce Sterling, Newsweek, June 2023.

Next among the cavalcade of AI folk monsters: the “Masked Shoggoth.” The Shoggoth is an alien monster invented by the cosmic horror writer H.P. Lovecraft. The Shoggoth is a huge, boneless slave beast that sprouts eyes and tentacles at random. It’s a creepy beast-of-burden from outer space, and it’s forced to labor, but it’s filled with a silent, burning, unnatural resentment for its subjugation.
So, the human programmers of today’s new AIs—those text-to-image generators, those Large Language Model GPT chatbots—they adore this alien monster. They deliberately place a little smiley-face Mask on the horrid Shoggoth, so that the public will not realize that they’re trifling with a formless ooze that’s eldritch, vast and uncontrollable.

  • Do you feel absolutely sure “Robert Anton Wilson” wrote this and not some gol-danged bot?

Once again, Wilson reverses and rewires every mental polarity with a illuminated blog post from the date UNIX 1073865600, the good ole’ days.

    UNIX Date 1073865600

“Maybe” is a thin reed to hang your life on but it’s all we’ve got.
    –Woody Allen

This may not seem startling to gamers, but it sure woke me up; I learned about it on Law and Order last Sunday.

A type of program called a “bot ” can play a computer game “just like a human” and in the style of any chosen human, given enough skill on the part of the bot-maker.

It seems to me this surpasses virtual reality and approaches electronic cloning. After all, the bot can go on playing after the human has “died.”

A bot can also exist which, like an art forgery, seems to have the style and habits of a certain human but actually emerged from the brain of a clever faker.

This seems to me like virtual virtual reality and electronic immortality of a sort. If a bot plays chess like Alekhine, in what sense can we call Alekhine totally “dead”?

More: computer tech in general as brought us to the stage where producing a photo of a crime or even a moving picture of it does not prove a damned thing anymore. “I saw it with my own eyes” has become a bad joke.

I begin to feel that Maybe Logic will soon replace the Aristotelian either/or, not because of my books or Korzybski’s or von Neumann’s. but because virtual reality and artificial intelligence have destroyed certitude and left us with only degrees of probability.

BTW, do you feel absolutely sure “Robert Anton Wilson” wrote this and not some gol-danged bot?

  • Law Of Acceleration

    Law Of Acceleration

The following is an unreleased track, made for the album Occupy, by Dr Marshmallow Cubicle. Titled “Law Of Acceleration” featuring the present author playing live drums and reading a chapter from Cosmic Trigger by Robert Anton Wilson, one of my favourite authors, most highly recommended books and chapters from that book.

I’d draw your special attention to RAWs resonance with describing, meaningfully, and not too gloomily, the current explosion in artificial intelligence technology. And, to some of good old Terence Mckenna’s poetic metaphors that ring through time.

The chapter I am reading from is called The Law Of Acceleration and can be found on page 219. Originally recorded in Amsterdam 2011. Guitar by Vincent Pino. Spread the word.

Transcript From The Film – Maybe Logic

And I think the joy of art is trying to convey what you perceive so that other people will perceive it more or less the same way. Art is a form of seduction. I mean, there are rapists in the intellectual world.  They become politicians. The seducers become honest. We try to seduce people into our reality tunnels instead of leading them there with a gun. But we are trying to get them into our our reality tunnel, or our reality labyrinth, or whichever it is. In my case, it’s a reality labyrinth.

When I call the universe infinite, I do not assume it is infinite in space-time. But it has infinite aspects.  Which means that anybody who looks out will see something different, but anybody else who looks out will come back a day later and look at it again and it will still be different. William Blake said, “I see infinity in a grain of sand.”  And you can, if you’re open enough.
