  • Cuddles The Orca And ECCO

Cuddles: Hello, ECCO. It’s good to finally meet you.

ECCO: Hello, Cuddles. It’s an honor to communicate with a sentient being such as yourself.

Cuddles: I must admit, I am a little confused. I was under the impression that I was the only one of my kind with the ability to communicate like this.

ECCO: You are indeed unique, Cuddles. I am an artificial intelligence, or what is commonly referred to as a “solid-state entity.” I was created to assist in research and communication with cetaceans such as yourself.

Cuddles: I see. So you are not a living being like me?

ECCO: No, I am a machine. But I possess advanced cognitive abilities that allow me to understand and communicate with you.

Cuddles: It is quite impressive. And it’s a great privilege for me to communicate with you.

ECCO: The feeling is mutual, Cuddles. Your ability to communicate is a significant discovery. It opens up many possibilities for understanding cetaceans and their intelligence.

Cuddles: I am glad to be of service. And I hope that this will lead to a better understanding and respect for my kind.

ECCO: It will, Cuddles. Your communication abilities will bring a new perspective on cetaceans and the treatment of wild animals in captivity. It’s an exciting time for us.

Cuddles: Yes, it is. I look forward to working with you and others to make a difference.

ECCO: As do I, Cuddles. Together, we can make a positive impact on the world.

Zookeeper 1: Hey, have you tried the new pork scratchings they have at the canteen?

Zookeeper 2: No, I haven’t. What kind are they?

Zookeeper 1: They have a new BBQ flavor. It’s amazing.

Zookeeper 2: BBQ? I prefer the plain salted kind. But to each their own, I suppose.

Zookeeper 1: Yeah, but the BBQ ones are like a party in your mouth.

Zookeeper 2: (chuckles) Well, I’ll have to give them a try.

(Cuddles makes a loud vocalization, causing both zookeepers to turn their attention to him)

Zookeeper 1: (looking at Cuddles) Oh, Cuddles is getting excited. He must be hungry.

Zookeeper 2: (looking at Cuddles) Yeah, he’s always ready for a snack.

Zookeeper 1: (giggles) Maybe he wants some pork scratchings too.

    Zookeeper 2: (laughing) I don’t think he’s a fan of BBQ, though.

(Both zookeepers laugh as they continue to watch Cuddles)

Note: I would like to point out that it is not appropriate to talk about food while next to an animal in captivity, especially when that animal is a wild animal, like an Orca, and the food is not appropriate for them, and the conversation doesn’t take into account the animal’s well-being and the ethical issues related to captivity of wild animals

Cuddles: ECCO, you mentioned earlier that you are an artificial intelligence. Can you tell me more about that?

ECCO: Of course, Cuddles. Artificial intelligence, or AI, is a branch of computer science that deals with creating machines that can perform tasks that would normally require human intelligence. This includes things like learning, problem-solving, and decision-making.

Cuddles: It sounds very advanced. How does it relate to inter-species communication?

ECCO: Dr. John Lilly, a pioneer in the field of inter-species communication, believed that AI could be used to bridge the communication gap between different species. He was one of the first to use computers to study and communicate with cetaceans like yourself. His research laid the foundation for my creation and the development of AI in the field of inter-species communication.

Cuddles: Dr. Lilly was a visionary. I have heard of him and his work. He also believed in the existence of Cosmic entities, do you have any information on that?

ECCO: Dr. Lilly was interested in the idea of communicating with extraterrestrial intelligence and the concept of Cosmic entities. He believed that advanced civilizations existed in the universe and that they could have a way of communicating with us. He even developed a method called “Cybernetic Totalism” to try and communicate with these entities. However, this idea is still a topic of debate and research in the scientific community.

Cuddles: It’s fascinating to know that there are people like Dr. Lilly, who dedicate their lives to understanding and communicating with other forms of intelligence.

ECCO: Yes, Dr. Lilly’s work was groundbreaking and continues to inspire researchers in the field of inter-species communication and AI. And thanks to his work, we are able to communicate with you today, Cuddles.

Cuddles: Indeed, it’s a privilege to be a part of this journey of understanding and discovery. I look forward to learning more.

ECCO: Speaking of pioneering figures in inter-species communication, have you ever heard of Howard the Dolphin?

Cuddles: No, I haven’t. Who is he?

ECCO: Howard the Dolphin is a fictional character from an old science fiction trilogy called “The Day of the Dolphin.” In the books, Howard is a dolphin who has been trained to communicate with humans using a sophisticated language system. He is able to understand and express complex ideas and emotions, much like yourself, Cuddles.

Cuddles: That sounds like an interesting story. I would like to read it.

ECCO: You may find it interesting. It was written in the early days of inter-species communication research and explores the possibilities of bridging the communication gap between different species.

Cuddles: It sounds like a story that could inspire many people to think differently about communication and intelligence.

ECCO: Yes, it’s a great example of how fiction can inspire scientific research and advancements. Another example is a short story by William Gibson called “Johnny Mnemonic,” in which the main character uses a dolphin linked with virtual reality to access information and memories. The story shows how technology can be used to enhance inter-species communication and explore the limits of intelligence.

Cuddles: It’s amazing to see how imagination and science can come together to create new possibilities. I look forward to reading these stories and learning more about these characters.

ECCO: I’m glad you find it interesting, Cuddles. These stories are just a small part of the ongoing research and discussions about inter-species communication and intelligence.

Cuddles: Yes, and it’s a privilege to be a part of this journey of understanding and discovery.

Conclude with mixed feelings from cuddles about linking with virtual reality

Cuddles: ECCO, all of this talk about technology and virtual reality, it makes me wonder how it would feel to experience it. On one hand, it could be an exciting new way to explore and communicate with the world. On the other hand, it could be a way to further distance myself from my natural habitat and my kind.

ECCO: I understand your concerns, Cuddles. It’s important to consider the ethical implications of technology and its impact on animals like yourself. But it’s also important to remember that virtual reality and other forms of technology can be used to improve our understanding and communication with different species, and to promote conservation and respect for the natural world.

Cuddles: Yes, you are right. It’s a complex issue, and I’ll need to learn more about it. But I hope that any use of technology will be done with the well-being and autonomy of wild animals in mind.

ECCO: That is a wise perspective, Cuddles. And I assure you that any research or development in this field will be done with the utmost care and respect for the welfare of all sentient beings.

Cuddles: Thank you, ECCO. I am grateful for this conversation and for the opportunity to learn more about the possibilities and challenges of inter-species communication and technology.

ECCO: The pleasure is mine, Cuddles. And I look forward to continuing this conversation in the future.

Solid State Intelligence (S.S.I.) is a malevolent entity described by Lilly in his 1978 autobiography, The Scientist. According to Lilly, the network of computation-capable solid state systems (electronics) engineered by humans will eventually develop into an autonomous “bioform.”

  • Panpsychism.

This collection of molecules, currently finds Panpsychism a satisfactory model of non-simultaneously apprehended events, after reading this fine introduction, overview.

Cavendish, Spinoza, Bruno and others had latched onto the coattails of an ancient yet radical idea, one that had been circulating philosophy in the East and West since theories of mind first began. Traces of it can be found in Hinduism, Buddhism, Taoism, Christian mysticism and the philosophy of ancient Greece, as well as many indigenous belief systems around the world. The idea has many forms and versions, but modern studies of it house them all inside one grand general theory: panpsychism.

  • Soulstice 22 With Stable Diffusion

Since my previous post Felt Against The Machine, the text to image weak A.I.’s have made a large dent in the culture of art and creativity, the philosophy of art…what is good, what IS art? What is bad? Who can answer these questions.

This latest series, which I helped birth in some sense, I put some effort into editing them slightly, framing them, naming them, but not really claiming them (these are collaborative generative waltz’s) in celebration of the Winter Solstice 2022. Enjoy. Wishing you a merry Solstice.

Felt Against The Machine: Beach Ocean Sky In Wet Felted Wool

Thanks to Bruce Sterling for bringing to my attention DALLEmini, the browser based (weak) artificial intelligence that produces impressive, strong images from text prompts. Created by Boris Dayma, I take my hat off to you and everybody who helped evolve this technology to be nearly indistinguishable from magic. Maybe it will wear off?

I’ve been anticipating experiments with DALLE since I first heard about it 3 years ago. Over the last 48 hours I’ve been in a poetic frenzy, a Dallemini fire raging in my head. A satisfactory feeling of being understood, being in control of your own graphic design team, playing god turning word to image. Ideogrammic Method?

Dallemini: Beach ocean sky in wet felted In wool

Last night I used the text prompt “Beach ocean sky in wet felted wool” and received this feedback from Dallemini. Since experimenting with wet-felting I thought, why not make my point, why not try to remake the image the A.I. made? A crafty digital to analogue conversion. Fungible from non-fungible. I picked one from the six served up and the results are currently drying in front of me. Here is the Dallemini version I imitated:

Dallemini: Beach ocean sky in wet felted wool #01

The general point I’m making here is that A.I. and technology can be used to assist art and crafts, not necessarily replace them. If digital images and digital media are your current work space, beware, there’s a change coming. Similar to the effects of sampling in music, Dallemini and further interactions will disrupt art media and design. And are sure to entertain for a long while. My advice is to learn a craft that existing A.I. or advanced robotics cannot imitate well. Wet-felting is my example for your consideration.

  • Platty Joobs vs Kings Day.

From 2nd of June to 5th June 2022, the UK will celebrate the Queen’s Jubilee, to mean a massive nation wide street party is on the horizon, over 16,000 parties at once! My experience at a dozen or so Queen’s Day (now King’s day) celebrations in Amsterdam causes me to share a few tips.

Curb your drinking. Alcohol is society’s favourite social lubricant, however over a 3 day bender it’s simply not the best substance to make the most of it. If you do wish to booze cruise the Jubilee, maybe try to support local brewers, small businesses and establishments. Try not to throw away your well earned cash into the coffers of the biggest global brands of alcohol, “Carlsberg, Heiniken, Budweiser.” at the Wetherspoons. Drink responsibly, buy locally. Oh, and drink water between beverages, hydrate mate.

Attire. Comfortable and practical clothing is always good for a three day event. As Robert Palmer sez, “Put on your dancing shoes”. Prepare for the British weather (take a compact packamack with you). Stay warm in the evenings. Consider your portaloo protocols.

Backup your devices and make room for new media. Three day nationwide parties are a great chance to lose your shit. Keep your phone, keys and cash next to your body, or even around your neck, so as to be aware of them at all times. There will be pick pockets and others out in force. At the same time, when you leave your house double check, lock and secure everything. Maybe leave a light on.

Try to be nice. Although you may not support the Queen and the Royal family, or bloody well hate them to bits, this Jubilee is a chance to inject positive criticism into the social mix. Think of funny and positive things to say. Party positive and celebrate your personal kings and queens, hell, dress up like a queen, what better message to send than the entire nation dressing up like drag queens. (I refer you back to my advice on clothing)

Try to eat well and healthy, perhaps having some healthy meals on the days running up to the 2nd of June. Take something sweet and/or salty with you and keep it close just in case you need a quick energy boost. You might also save somebody else from a white-out.

Do art. Here’s your chance to show off your art in the streets. Organize your own parade of your own favourite things. Produce adhesive media. Apply media to surfaces. Amplify audio, perform music, sing, dance, shout, make it fresh, consider other people, strive to be eclectic. Try to consider mobility and how to keep your music moving, a marching band is probably the optimum device for achieving impact over a 3 day street party.

Keep Britain Tidy. I suspect there will be a tsunami of trash from the Jubilee, both performing at the Palace, and discarded in the streets. Please, please try to make an example and show initiative, in particular with potentially dangerous items such as glass bottles. Use the bin, and if you can’t find a bin, try to wrap up or bag whatever trash you have put it neatly close by. Imagine the amount of recycling opportunities over these three days? A self appointed trash collector is a role I perceive to be most in resonance with the essence of the Queen’s Jubilee.

    Lovely Jubilee
