  • Robert Anton Wilson General Intelligence

    Robert Anton Wilson General Intelligence

Published for MAYBEDAY 2020. Thanks for the Support.

    RAWAGI

The challenge to write and record this has proved to be the toughest assignment I have set myself to date, to write and make meaning and coherence of things I do not fully understand. If you can forgive my ignorance and errors I’ll be grateful. I hope that my overemphasis on links to source papers and articles will make up for my over-exaggerations and self-delusions.–Steven “Fly” Pratt, 20th July, 2020.

    “Nothing is ‘mere’–Richard Feynman.

This collection of molecules has been whimsically tossing around the concept of a Robert Anton Wilson Artificial General Intelligence for nearly a decade, since I first came across the heavyweight champion of the field, Ben Goertzel. If you want to skip my musings and get into the thick of it, just watch his latest interview. If not only for the purpose of grasping how ambiguous the isolated terms “general” and “Intelligence” are and Ben’s well positioned interpretation of both those words charged with maximum meaning. I need not explain to the RAW heads in the room how these themes weave through his life and works.

Rather than continue in a straight-ahead, step-by-step manner, I want to perform by example and mix it up, let the chips fall where they may, moving from node. I’m keeping free, seeking surprise = information. Happy RAW day. Make it NEW!

“I was an early, and enthusiastic experimenter with LSD, peyote, magic mushrooms and any other compound that mutated consciousness. The result was that I became more agnostic but less superior about it….”

“…I am endlessly fascinated by every new tool or technique that breaks down robot circuits in our brains (Correct Answer Machines) and spurs creativity, higher intelligence, expanded consciousness, and above all, broader compassion.–Robert Anton Wilson, Left And Right: A Non-Euclidean Perspective. Email To The Universe. Pg. 135.

Robert Anton Wilson: General Intelligence For The People

    “Love All The People”–Bill Hicks.

The further research I do into Artificial General Intelligence, the more I’d like to give a brief round-up of who I suspect are the major players. And gather some quotes I feel help to unpack my message, or just visit my RAWGI Playlist HERE.

Before bursting into my philosophical whimsy on RAWGI, I’d like to make a statement for all future AGI, deep learning projects. I hold no PhD, am affiliated with no universities or institutions and am not a member of any political or religious organizations. From this standpoint I’d like to echo the call for A.I. enthusiasts to secure trust and understanding, I see a lot of technophobia in the new pandemic-time and I think A.I researchers need to prepare a broad and robust line of defence against attacks, ranging from the ultra-moronic haters, UK tabloid techniques, to good meaning bad actors, to megalomaniacal sociopaths.

My minority point of view (perhaps in the minority of one) proposes that individual human beings from history, their social-moral personal lives, are critical together with explanatory knowledge that they produced. For example, the life and death of Alan Turing vs. The Turing Test and other technical contributions. I guess that, a Universal Constructor + AGI, requires training, like for all the Olympic events at once and might not like being bullshitted.

The more often I use the term RAWAGI the less I like it as a title due to my wish in avoiding claims this is a vanity project and the start of a path to necromancy and worship of idols. Please remember that Wilson often repeated that a student is an asshole looking for somebody to attach themselves too and he disliked being idolized or being considered a guru. I feel this was reflected in some of his classes and their titles at the on-line Maybe Logic Academy between 2004-2006, they were never about him or to inflate his academic tenure among scholars, they were classes jam packed with a smorgasbord of explanatory knowledge systems, humbly encouraging ass-holes to suspend judgement and consider both the parts and the whole.

For clarity, let me repeat, the purpose of this outline for a new discussion between like-minded individuals, is by no means limited to RAW, and meant to cause the reader to think up their own dream-team inputs, or the least critical amount of individuals and their innovations of explanatory knowledge from history, who make up a finite group but quickly by association and resonance, interconnect congruently. For example, Wilson’s work demonstrating Isomorphism between Finnegans Wake, Cabala, I-Ching and Quantum Physics, a typical Wilson clusterfuck that he diligently turns in Scorsese-like, cinematic prose. And then there’s all that Magick and LSD and metaprogramming, bloody scrumptious.

The questions raised by RAW concerning the tale of the tribe, partly deal with literary criticism on the one-hand and biographical details on the other. For me, they pose challenges and avenues for growth and discovery, and now with the race to make a cool friendly and funny smart superintelligence. Come on, it has to be designed on Bob, you think so? The critical question concerning “how much of the song of myself do I put in the poem vs. how much history of the others do I include and finally, how to make it cohere” reflects a similar problem I see facing AGI programs, the limits of human art and creativity and manipulation, in the province of mind?

“Open-Ended Intelligence is postmodernism and a bit of Eastern philosophy projected into the realm of modern science.–Ben Goertzel, July 2020.

The lingering questions of any historical figure, from the point of view of their work, isolated from their lifestyle–political stance and personality–impacts the field of Friendly Artificial Intelligence, or FAI. Yes, there’s a field of research and AGI study, with a name that signifies in a nutshell what I’m suggesting we build. Cheerful Artificial Intelligence, embodied in the life and life’s work of Robert Anton Wilson, cross-examined and reconstructed from his digital-dozen individuals that make up the tale of the tribe.

SOPHIA, the interactive weak A.I designed and built by David Hanson and Ben Goertzel and their team, was the little sister to a similar yet less convincing Philip K. Dick robot. Yes please, you’re joking right? I’d not suggest Wilson’s science fiction is comparable to that of P.K.D stylistically or indeed in popularity, but both authors knew and respected each other and each other’s work enough to warrant a non-fictional correlation between them, factually documented. I’d call this an intersection point – PKD-RAW. Besides his recently published EXEGESIS book, his works exhibit psychically dazzling Science Fiction prose, Wilson on the other hand published an equal amount of fiction and non-fiction, dashings of his non-fiction confronted hard problems and fringe theories with a razor beam of philosophical prowess.

I’ve read previous critiques of Wilson based on reviews of his fiction exclusively, that seems foolish and small minded to me. I suppose most authors get their life’s work whittled down to one book in the end. Perhaps, one downfall of being such a generalist as RAW is the miss-categorization of his books and previous inability to promote them, I say previously because thankfully Hilaritas Press, under the steam of Rick Rasa and Christina Pearson and team are republishing all of RAW’s books with new prologues, epilogues, cover designs and fine-tooth edits.

With luck, it will be upto the RAWGI algorithm to decide or inform us precisely how much fiction is within his non-fiction and vice versa. The exciting possibilities of reviewing RAW’s works in light of new Natural Language Processing tools and the direction of cutting edge mathematics, physics and AGI make my mouth water. I confess, in a practical sense I offer little. To repeat, it’s the tale of the tribe and the ongoing study of it’s interrelations as defined by RAW, that I suspect will contribute to an, as yet, unforeseen field of AGI.

Robert Anton Wilson was a man of the people, and so it goes…any A.G.I project with his mark on it should be firstly, for all the people (I know, that’s hard to quantify and a bit vague innit’). He was not in it for the money or the fame, (whatever that is?) his integrity and sincerity remain unparalleled among American writer/philosopher/conspiracy dons. He was no fan of the uniformed authorities, in particular the Military Agricultural Media Pharmaceutical Entertainment monster, the beast the United States Of America had morphed into during his lifetime, 1932-2007. His treatment by the medical associations and medical insurance companies in his last days may be remembered as a further stain on the USA, thankfully his close friends, family and fans from afar all pulled together and made it bearable for him and gave him a dignified send off.

To any future researchers and budding computer scientists reading this, the CIA Nazi Tsarist Alliance defined by Wilson distinguishes his integrity and brevity, cutting beyond other researchers in the field, there’s a lot of boot-lickers out there, spivs and pound-shop Machiavelli’s, trying to get another grant or milk the cash cow for a few greedy people. I sense that Bob would always call out lying greedy bastards, I personally loved him for that, his fearlessness, coupled with a good sense of justice.Track trace and isolate the super-rich, I say, share the wealth using A.I. algorithms to deduce the fairest and fastest way to deliver our world-around fair and equal shares, justice. ANY future artificial general intelligence program will have to wrestle with RAW facts of his life, or counter facts. Consider this a sort of soft challenge, which other contenders for a limited AGI training set, now consider stepping very carefully when it comes to conspiracy theory and A.I. Please, thank you Alexa/Siri/Sophie/Computer/Computer.

In a recent video presentation by David Deutsch, recorded in April 2020, he confirmed for me the RAWesque statement that approximately, YOU and each and every individual human (infinite flux of beingness) is precisely a Universal Constructor, endowed with *Artificial General Intelligence. “YOU are the master who makes the doughnut green.” Deutsch adds that the prefix *Artificial can be dropped, leaving General Intelligence, G.I. As you were son, chill.

I’m attracted to this optimistic and gratifying way of describing humanity in 2020, in effect leading to our necessity for sympathy and empathy and compassion, lots of it, when trying to understand other symbol systems and entities and batshit crazy people talking shit.

    TTOTT AGI

First, for example, there remains a necessity of the tale of the tribe to stem from an individual human narrator, anchored in space and time and history. Secondly the tale of the tribe is constructed in the language of epic poetry, an epic poem including history, a modern verse epic. “Poetry contains a high amount of information, political speeches low.” Thirdly, the tale of the tribe should…be relevant globally, trans-cultural and trans-linguistic, a King Kong sized order, bold and encyclopedic in scope, a group thing. The Tribe here is used as a synonym for humanity, when considered within a hyperconnected, McLuhanesque, Global Village (Digital Village). In the comforting concept of oneness and togetherness, one tribe aboard Spaceship Earth. Detribalization by way of the tale of the tribe to retribalize as one-tribe with a common altruistic, benevolent, intelligent and empathic process. Interacting processing.

Robert Anton Wilson General Intelligence, simply, or relatively simply exploiting GPT-3 could be trained on his writings about the eight circuit, twenty-four state model, multi-model agnosticism and general semantics, a good honest RAW diet. Wilson performs understanding consistently in his writings, referencing and quoting thousands of quality critters, adding his twist. Wilson’s lifework demonstrates comprehensive explanatory knowledge over five decades. The dozen historical characters from his unfinished work, the tale of the tribe, produce a finite web of innovators and progressive minds, together with RAW himself they bootstrap a broad interdisciplinary gang of general intelligence agents, heretics with integrity. Plus, I’d boost up the input with some Lenny Bruce, Three Stooges and George Carlin, don’t let my mumbles about RAW cause you to forget he’s a sitdown comedian boss.

I’m calling, hear me now, for an international interdisciplinary RAW Research Group and I’d like to propose three initial categories.

    1. RAWAGI Hard explanatory knowledge. e.g physics, mathematics, biology, chemistry.
    1. RAWAGI Soft explanatory knowledge. e.g writings on philosophy, social sciences, psychology, mysticism and conspiracy theory, science fiction.
    1. RAWAGI poetic floppy explanatory knowledge. e.g. Fiction, satire, poetry, comedy.

I feel fortunate to be in orbit with many in the field of Robert Anton Wilson studies, reaching across all three of the above and beyond, way out the ground. I sincerely hope to ignite interest in thinkers to consider contributing a word or two, head-nod in support, or shaking of the head in critical feedback. I’m largely in support of AGI, Artificial Intelligence Research, Deep Learning and Machine Intelligence Programs and some corresponding research, those reading this with a technophobic bias will now try harder to distinguish their voice from the chorus of populist garbage streaming from the toxic populist media outlets. That said, I’m equally critical or indeed more critical than said technophobic detractors, in attempting to look at the myriad of factors and questions and suspend my limited judgement and opinions, I’m no more willing to accept any technocratic robot overlords than anybody else but we have to try harder to distinguish livingry from killingry.

Leaving Wilson’s writing and lectures aside for a moment, I’d like to present individuals from history, their principles and their methodologies, relevant to today’s theme. These are all featured in Wilson’s, the tale of the tribe, arguably the least amount of individuals resulting in the maximum connectivity to all other human explanatory knowledge, some were rebels and heretics too. I’d hazard a bet that Wilson intended these beloved influences on him to make up a Wilsonian flavoured history of decentralized philosophy, information theory, media, language and internet. Let’s run with that, like the triangular doodle with legs he sketched. The following is another slalom through RAWs ALL-STAR-CAST, as defined and noted in the back of his book TSOG: The Thing That Ate The Constitution.

Giordano Bruno is a well known example of new explanatory knowledge creation–in this case decentralized cosmology and heliocentrism–slowed down by forces of god damned ignorance. The list of thinkers. their new methods and related principles that Bruno influenced after he was burnt alive at the stake, construct a lineage through history leading up to Leary and Wilson and to the tale of the tribe. Bruno’s combination of hard and soft explanatory knowledge, in some sense, presents a challenge to distinguish one from another, decentralized social systems such as Mutualism, syndicalism and anarcho-communism seem compatible with decentralized modern peer-to-peer systems, anticipatory democracy and cooperative world-around-intelligent resource management. I see connections everywhere I look and I dearly hope you see them too.

Giambattista Vico exhibits masses of exquisite work focused on epistemology and 18th century explanatory knowledge, condensing what came before him into a more general system of knowledge. He was no friend of the church, traceable to such RAW nodes as Karl Popper, James Joyce and Marshall McLuhan. Perhaps, in the soft explanatory knowledge category, Vico provides any training set with a solid historically verifiable node or time-stub, trackable up to the present day.

Friederich Nietzsche, a granddaddy of many AGI concerns, the eternal return, infinite flux of beingness and the Superman, all went a way to updating the explanatory knowledge that came before him for his and our time, before his time, and including currents of Bruno and Vico. Boldly taking on outdated theological and social principles and using rigorous logical deduction and reasoning, together with a poetic turn of prose to raise hell. Tracking his influence on those who condensed and clarified his principles evokes a series of branches pushing upwards and outwards to the sky, alternatively they trace roots back in time, so deeper underground.

William Butler Yeats, Ezra Pound, James Joyce. Three fathers of modernism and performers by the example of the tale of the tribe, each created epic poems including history and cut their own paths into and out of, moving beyond language (is that even possible, I mean wow). Their three great works, A-Vision, The Cantos and Finnegans Wake are perfect texts for training RAW General Intelligence, poetry containing high uncertainty, so low predictability, so…high information. Finnegans Wake in particular, due to the immense volume of published criticism about it and due to its reach into thousands of interdisciplinary fields of academia worldwide, seems obviously central training, or A.G.I boot-camp, for deep learning and General Intelligence algorithms to get lit. Powerful and continually surprising, novel, like fidget spinners, able to survive into the 2020s and keep producing new fields of study, seemingly without end. Pound’s ideogrammic method and explanatory knowledge about oriental, Asiatic and Chinese languages, is a ttott training set that might make RAW smile authentically. Non-simultaneously apprehended events, interacting, processing. Ideogram and Alphabet. Alphabet vs. The Equation. TV and Internet, Joyce/Shannon/Pound/McLuhan, all these fertile places have academic tentacles and underground social roots to begin a comparative study and construct a hierarchy of values, spur on the discussion toward putting the people into People’s Intelligence.

Sound to light and voice to image translation algorithms built on probabilistic reasoning and game theory, lead me straight back to the tale of the tribe. To reverse engineer principles and methods and explanatory knowledge systems that impacted Internet and global digital communications, by doing so creating a people’s general intelligence network, open source, spreading backwards and fanning outwards through history, countered by compassionate measured genius all night long.

Buckminster Fuller. A dazzling example of hard explanatory knowledge creation, and independently focused problem solving, ergo, design-science engineering. Fuller, like Wilson is a picture postcard definition of General Intelligence (comprehensive thinking) and Fuller exhibits dozens of real world examples of how comprehensive knowledge, or explanatory knowledge, can combine to create powerful problem solving tools: Synergetics, Dymaxion geometry, Tensegrity structures, world-around interconnected systems. Fuller also exhibited soft and poetic explanatory knowledge through long poems, neologisms and an ability to speak at length maintaining a rigorous operationalist, no bullshit, language. Together with Karl Popper, I view the Popper/Fuller methods the best examples of what explanatory knowledge is, and why it relates to the open society and cooperative initiatives to share and build better systems of explanatory knowledge. The opposite of lies, deceit and disinformation in the name of business, spy games and slowing progress. Fuller knew that the way to overcome obstacles is to obsolete them using superior explanatory knowledge, with an accent on planetary.

Claude Shannon And Norbert Wiener. The tale of the tribe gets technically complex with the works of Claude Shannon and Norbert Wiener. Information Theory and Cybernetics respectively. Mathematicians and engineers, both these hard scientists are featured in Wilson’s digital-dozen and make the explicit time-stub in history, and specific innovation in explanatory knowledge: Shannon’s 1948 paper “The Mathematical Theory Of Communication ”. Any and all computer programs, software and digital technologies will have grandfather Shannon signature somewhere in the system. Training a deep learning or AGI algorithm on Claude Shannon’s work is in itself a strange loop as it’s already doing that by design. In the context of Shannon’s historical position, the roots of who came before and the branches of who came after, Wilson goes to the source of the hard mathematical principles at work underneath the hood of our Internet browsers and hyper-connected devices. Note that, Finnegans Wake is mentioned explicitly in Shannon’s groundbreaking paper as an example of extreme low-redundancy of information, or predictability, in the English language.

Weiner and John von Neumann, another of Wilson’s quality critters, started the Macy Conferences, moving the focus toward biology “Circular Causal and Feedback Mechanisms in Biological and Social Systems”.

“Markov chains are used throughout information processing. Claude Shannon‘s famous 1948 paper A Mathematical Theory of Communication, which in a single step created the field of information theory, opens by introducing the concept of entropy through Markov modeling of the English language. Such idealized models can capture many of the statistical regularities of systems.”–https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Markov_chain#Information_and_computer_science

Alfred Korzybski. The key to Korzybski place lies in the name of the field he helped create, General Semantics. The reasoning and definition of the word General, in General Semantics, casts us a solid verifiable example of new explanatory knowledge created to further human progress and better communication between equals. Wilson adopts Korzybski’s recommendations in his writing and speaking such as E-prime and space-time binding, adding to the ability of critics and readers and deep learning algorithms, to better distinguish between hard and soft sciences, hard and soft facts and begin to formulate a hierarchy of values. Wilson’s use and recommendation of adopting semantic hygiene add to the attraction of using his comprehensive works as a training set for AGI or is this all too close to what actually happened but nobody wants to give the guy his due credit? Take a peek at Raw Semantics

Marshall McLuhan. Besides Wilson, McLuhan’s lifework is a Rosetta Stone for the tale of the tribe. McLuhan did not produce a single epic poem including history, yet he pulled together most but not all of the threads RAW intended to, explicitly from Giordano Bruno, to Vico and Nietzsche, Yeats, Joyce, Pound, Korzybski, Shannon, Weiner and Fuller. McLuhan condensed hard and soft explanatory knowledge to create a new one, the language of media studies, media effects and the impact of global communications: the global village. McLuhan displayed his ardent generalist in public, he extolled the practice of interdisciplinary study, cross-curricular activities and Popperesque constructive criticism, constant revision and updating, measurement. The distinguishing features between McLuhan and Wilson, besides their similarities, help to broaden the future horizon of media studies. Starting with Bruno rather than Shannon.

Perhaps it’s the history of ideas and principles that came before, the long lineage of ideas leading up to Shannon’s wicked condensation of 3000 years of progress into a new explanatory knowledge: Digital Communications. The historical hidden variables and obstacles (in the human universe) are teachable examples of dangers and forces working to slow down explanatory knowledge and its sharing, universally. One way of looking at the tale of the tribe is as a history of condensation via innovation (usually also definable as the creation of simpler and simpler explanatory knowledge) for example, Python Programming Language and it’s general intelligence and universal open-sharing process. One step away from the Universal Constructor and/or Artificial General Intelligence (and don’t forget Quantum Computing in the mix).

My goal here is to wet the appetite of Robert Anton Wilson fans with a road-map to a new deep learning, weak A.I. project, rather crudely defined by inputting selected works by Wilson into a existent, off-the-shelf algorithm that will produce a chain of letters, words, sentences and paragraphs, approximating and/or computing other probabilistic methods, to produce a Robert Anton Wilson like, automatically generated text, or voice. Sounds creepy I know, Don’t worry the soundtrack will be super sick too.
For this particular endeavour, I might add that due to relations with the Robert Anton Wilson Trust and Hilaritas Press I can propose a fully authorized collection of texts by RAW, without snatching and stealing any text off the web. This kind of integrity, and willingness to listen and communicate with holders of copyrights and intellectual property is another important factor to be considered when training any AGI, to understand and realize and modify its programming based upon explanatory knowledge about the need for human privacy, and intellectual copyright and correct credits and acknowledgement.

With an integral and consistently empathic individual like Robert Anton Wilson, let us try to start as we mean to go on, by giving credit and thanks for all the shared explanatory knowledge created by such progressive humanitarians, such as RAW, the supporters of his legacy and the ancestors. Epistemology without overbearing authority, multi-model agnosticism, suspended judgement, critical feedback, a fair sense of humour and oodles of sympathy and empathy, yes yes to all that. These are the characteristics I would like to see programmed into deep learning and/or AGI, I suspect that here lie the tangled threads that may lead to encouraging altruism and benevolence, at the same time uncovering as yet unforeseen interpretations of Wilson’s unfinished masterpiece, the tale of the tribe. Or just have fun with GAN Artbreeder.

The works of J.K Rawling, George R.R Martin, H.P Lovecraft, J.R.R Tolkien and others have been used for weak A.I. research. Let’s plan to design and build a RAW A.I. why not?
If your response is, “I ain’t got time, do it yourself….” it’s all good. I’m reaching out to start a conversation, design a roadmap. The fact Markov Chains, from which RAW took his pseudonyms, Markoff Chainey and Mark Chan underly text-generation algorithms is the epiphany that started me off again.

  • May The Best Story Win: Spirituality, Religion And Shamanism.

Dedicated to my mother Della Pratt, on her 75th Birthday. I love you.

“Dao, the process, seems more nitty-gritty and tangible since I acquired an apartment with a panoramic vista of Monterey Bay and the surrounding hills. The view never seems quite the same twice. Waves, sun, fogs, seasons, dogs, dolphins, moons, planets, stars — all seem flowing, as if every kind of evolution, cosmic to biological, parades before me. More and more I lose contact with “me” and flow with all else that flows..the Dao-process.”–Robert Anton Wilson, Thought Of The Month 2002.

I want to dive into the hot and holy waters of spirituality to see where my thoughts take me if I ask myself, what does Steve Fly believe? (2.4k Words, approx. 3-4 min. read)

Off the top, I’d define my own position or my goal when communicating on these matters as Multi-model agnosticism, a term lifted from Robert Anton Wilson, roughly translated to mean, suspension of disbelief coupled with a passion for new synthesis and pluralism.

I feel I do not have to believe in a permanent supernatural force to enter into alternate modes of consciousness, associated with spirituality, religion. That said, I try to remain humble to the fact that some discipline and devotional practice can cause states of consciousness radically different from what my own limited experience can produce. Scepticism mixed with a playful willingness to engage with alternate realities is a personal balance you must strike, one man’s play is another man’s absolute reality. On a general level the ability for each of us to navigate the thermo-plastic reality around us is critical for our sanity and survival, narratives that we tell ourselves and others limit or expand our perceptions of spirit.

In soundbites I could say, give me religion without priestcraft, give me my own church in the form of my body and our planet, give me scripture in the language of RNA-DNA transcription and Python code, give us all the Gods and in all the things, give me parables poetry and true story. Be aware of throwing the baby out with the holy water. Every culture, tradition, ritual, religion, book, method and language is a portal of discovery for YOU to interpret and to grow from. With a mantra on repeat such as “the map is not the territory,” the dangers of taking anything too literally is lessened, together with fear of the word of god.

Any psychonaut who conducted a little post-research into parallel experiences will come to discover Shamanism. For me, personally speaking, I thought I’d found my spiritual home when I first read about wild rituals that include entheogenic substances, ecstatic dancing, singing, chanting and trans-dimensional trips with insect animal-plant entities! Hell yeah, where do I join up? I was a naive teenager and perhaps fit the stereotypical middle-class white kid who discovered acid and went on to believe he was an urban shaman because he could float down to the 24-hour petrol station and buy a pack of large Rizzla papers at 4.00 A.M.

As the years passed I continued my study of Shamanism-lite, today I remain in awe of indigenous and aboriginal traditions that survived today, in the face of growing adversity in part due to disaster capitalism munching on their homeland and spirit allies. To make a fanciful analogy, imagine if Vatican City were situated deep in the Amazon jungle and only a handful of priests lived there. Imagine loggers and fossil fuel prospectors moving in, threatening to destroy their holy Churches (trees) and violent threats on their life if they do not comply by moving, or selling out. Imagine the major religious institutions being under such a threat as indigenous Shamanism, while at the same time secular society relegates Shamanism to snowflake culture, off with the fairies and the druggies.

I’ll consider these different views while at the same time shouting loud from the rooftops: entheogens consumed in the correct set and setting, make up a part of my spiritual practice based on past spiritual experiences. My spiritual philosophy is best defined and demonstrated in nature, a process evidenced by the evolutionary epistemological synthesis between Toads, Toadstools (Fly Agaric) and flies. See Fly Agaric, Flies And Toads: A New Hypothesis by Georgio Samorini 1999.

My challenge to you and to other religions and spiritual practitioners is to try and match these facts of processes observable in nature with scripture. Botanical and epistemological processes observable in nature, I would argue, are holy scripture composed in the complex undecipherable chemical-geometrical language of RNA-DNA synthesis, cell replication, photosynthesis and symbiosis. Nobody “said or wrote” anything.

Spirit entities like those encountered in plant based Shamanic traditions are entangled with our human RNA DNA brain-body nervous system, somewhat trapped in our symbolic language, held hostage by the individual ego and sense of self. I’m guessing here. Shamans meet with, are devoured by, wrestle and dance with all manner of entities, a phantasmagoria of animal insect-plant/fungus hybrids, winged serpents, toads, birds of prey, buffalo, bats, bees, flies, reindeer. I find it interesting and poignant that rarely are humans encountered in Shamanic vision quests, I deduce this stays in the domain of the anthropomorphic traditions where the schlong is more or less what makes an entity divine or not.

I can think of a number of western parallels to this problem of language and identity, such as the Korzybski, Sapir Whorf Hypothesis: the language you use can transform your apprehension of the cosmos (also lifted from R.A.W) Benjamin Whorf, coincidently, studied Hopi languages extensively, concluding that they have a unique apprehension of the cosmos due to a unique use of Syntax. By extension of this idea, you can follow this principle and imagine how different cultures using different language and syntax experience the cosmos (to mean everything) very differently. By extension of extension, now consider Marshall McLuhan and how the medium of the message transforms the message utterly.

The implications and findings from comparative studies of religion, in contrast to Shamanic traditions, are worthy of consideration and to me brings up another challenge to those who adhere to a single true religious faith, in what language does God speak to you?

Experimenting with polytheism may also bring clarity to the questions of Shaman to a Western mind, rather than deny and negate subjective experiences based on some absolute, I’d suggest yet again that a playful willingness to experiment with belief, temporarily. Here I might also point you to Magick and Acting as two such existing playful examples. Take notes and keep a diary, write out your thoughts if you can, I find this process helps me to order and clarify my own thoughts and consider how to share them with others.

Another distinguishing feature can be found in sacraments, how they’re consumed, with what intention and what is the Sacrament chemically made of, what may it mean symbolically. I conclude that the three major religions forbid any entheogen or psychoactive compound, rather using alcoholic wines and placebo (the eucharist wafer) to mimic ingesting flesh of the gods. Shamanic traditions on the other hand, openly and explicitly ingest and worship Peyote, Ayahuasca, Iboga and a variety of Magic Mushrooms. Evidence suggests humans and proto-humans have been getting high long before the one and only true religions were established before over-confident individuals claimed contact with the divine or stated their absolute knowledge of man, god and universe. In other words, I’ll tolerate your limited knowledge of spirituality, if you’ll tolerate mine.

One interpretation linked with the end of the Mayan Long-Count Calendar and prophecy that I like, involves the tribe (humanity) rediscovering entheogens (Magic Mushrooms) and regrouping to lead the regenesis of planet earth, which mimics the general goal of the current climate crisis movement. Through deeper connections with the planet, new maps and models and metaphors can be formed, to help assist in the regenerative process, to give the planet, flora and fauna what they need to continue doing what they do: grow naturally abundant. Psychedelics (entheogens) are critical tools for nurturing intelligence and harmony, attention to detail and the ability to cultivate compassion/empathy.

To be blunt, I see a lot of fake shit out there today, a lot of disease and ignorance. Many are lost, have been lost for a long time, some have ignored the signposts and repeated warnings, choosing to walk into the wall over and over again. You cannot recover from death, and that’s where we are heading, some sooner due to stronger ignorance. Like moths flying into a light bulb over and over again every night, not listening or caring or being willing to learn can lead to physical Death. Sometimes I feel a deeper connection with animals, plants and insects than I do with humans, especially the greedy racist xenophobic homophobic violence-prone, loud-mouthed liars and predators. Critical decisions personal and collective lie ahead, we all have work to do, billions of people need help, billions. A new world is possible, shine your light. I refuse to look away but I also refuse to pass without comment.

Yes, to me this fits the description of a global spiritual emergency and a global material emergency. Thoughts and prayers as currently practised are not working for the large population of earth. Perhaps modify our thinking and prayer so it includes indigenous and aboriginal teachings. Nurturing common ground with the Thoughts and Prayers across faiths and lead the way into deeper thoughts and deeper prayer rather than blow off the cliche’ used to mask detail. Join in thought and prayer on the regular, innovate to lead by example. Where do your thoughts go?

I am currently an apprentice Shaman of the urban poet, drummer, DJ variety. These practises or art forms make up my spiritual practice, or you could say my religion, my means to connect with non-human entities, such as my muses. If I had to choose a pre-existing spiritual tradition that hits all the bases of my interests, I’d pick Shamanism, drums, music, long poetic chants, sacred sacraments and dancing, yep.

Shamanic practice has some overlap with the original illegal rave scene in the UK and the birth of most forms of electronic music and the spontaneous gatherings of urban tribes worldwide. Seeking connection through ecstasy, there’s a kinship with ancient ancestors who share similar desires for dancing, exultation, healing, ecstasy plus a yearning to reconnect and regenerate mother earth. Terence Mckenna was on the periphery of this movement and was present in the mix that led to new tribal sound systems throughout the 1990s and into the naughties.

Mirrored by what happened in the 1960s, the 90’s birthed a new generation of apprentice Shaman, stumbling along the bardo’s seeking truth through art and beauty through harmony and dance, surrounded by neoliberal disaster capitalism and climate degeneration. Groups of fledgeling urban Shaman formed and splintered off into a thousand paths, some went into PR, marketing, advertising, super clubs and the global dance music business. Like what transpired in the late ’80s to produce Silicon Valley, Shamanic skills deployed and sold to the worldwide computer industry and the emerging telecommunications industry.

A smaller but significant tribe took other routes, continued to innovate art and music and words with respect, integrity and passion. The temple is not for sale and Shamanism is not for sale, religion and art share a lot in common, it’s the price that distinguishes the difference here, how much for the temple and paid in what kind, blood/gold/bitcoin?

Today it’s clear to me that religious or secular ideology that does not accept the fact we are all brothers and sisters rooted and sprouted from the same RNA-DNA transcript (individually expressed through our unique body sense and experience of time) are antiquated, heading for extinction like dinosaurs. Yet another distinguishing feature of indigenous spiritual practice is the shared tradition of the gathering. The idea/story/song that tells of a tribal gathering event, a gathering of humans during a global emergency (take your pick) to reconnect with mother earth listen to her advice and pass it on to ALL the people.

Some powerful thoughts and prayers are required, fierce blessings, no doubt. Perhaps entheogens play a part here if we can listen and interpret what we hear with selfless reverence. Keep in mind the power of story to transform humanity very quickly using hyper-connected media, sometimes producing a new piece of common ground with diverse peoples worldwide.

I guess that if six highly experienced Amazonian Shaman came up with a practical solution, such as a recipe for a new medicine or vaccine tomorrow, mainstream medicine and culture would not take it seriously. However, if the recipe was detailed in a documentary format with a soundtrack by DJ Shadow, guest narrators Samuel Jackson, Jamies Oliver, Gordon Ramsey and Jack Back, with a global release scheduled on Netflix, these facts can get fleshed out and reach the minds of the people, maybe leading to a new sub-genre of experimental films made with experimental techniques.

Story and narrative are powerful beyond measure. Song and music and dance and costume are even more powerful when bootstrapped, use forces don’t fight them. Have fun, challenge the gods to a duel, stand your ground, play, take down a King or Prime Minister, be a cruel dispassionate God who tortures his characters, play with paradox and explore the dark recesses of your creative mind, reach for forbidden fruit and eat it, take another. Within story world you are alike Kukulkan (Quetzalcoatl: The Winged Serpent) a roving spirit of intelligence, free to fly anywhere and anytime, free to write what you like and add a serpent’s bite, you have two wings, one tragedy the other comedy and a tale that reaches the furthest galaxies. Consider the Shamanic overtones to the animated series: Midnight Gospel, for example.

I consider the process of building a proposal and plan for a documentary, part of my spiritual practice and shamanic apprenticeship. Singing matter, dancing matter, healing matter, moving images, rooted in plants/insects/animals and flora, the tale of the gathering of the tribes.

“This is why the shaman is the remote ancestor of the poet and artist. Our need to feel part of the world seems to demand that we express ourselves through creative activity. The ultimate wellsprings of this creativity are hidden in the mystery of language. Shamanic ecstasy is an act of surrender that authenticates both the individual self and that which is surrendered to, the mystery of being. Because our maps of reality are determined by our present circumstances, we tend to lose awareness of the larger patterns of time and space. Only by gaining access to the Transcendent Other can those patterns of time and space and our role in them be glimpsed.”–Terence McKenna, Food of the Gods: The Search for the Original Tree of Knowledge.

Warriors Of The Rainbow 2020: A Trip Back To Novelty Wave

A Little Introduction (approx. 7 min. read)

Hi, the following essay sprawled out of control into a what I now call a woo-woo piece. A densely packed linked up trans-media story, riddled with facts, methodology and research based thinking, yet considering epoch sized, call em’ cosmic-ramifications, or woo-woo. I’d like to thank everybody who crossed my path along the way and above all to wish readers a strong, resilient and joyous 2020 as we shuffle toward the lights. After a number of perceived synchronicities recently, charged by the universal sense of existential dread flowing through the species at the moment, I’m reflecting on 44 days that impacted my life in 2012 and what I can learn in 2020. If you get tired of my tales you can skip to video and music links.

My story begins around 1996, when I was living in Stourbridge UK and experimenting with psychedelic drugs and trip poets. I discovered two authors simultaneously, thanks to close friends, that had a deep and lasting impact on my life: Terence McKenna and Robert Anton Wilson. When I discovered the chapter, Law Of Acceleration, in Wilson’s popular work of non-fiction Cosmic Trigger (1977) and his inclusion of McKenna’s Timewave-Zero theory, the penny dropped, or my voice dropped, something dropped. Wilson’s model of information doubling and onward to distinguishing exponential growth, including McKenna’s model and his love for entheogens and magic mushrooms was precisely what I needed to hear. Since then, I’ve followed the 2012 stuff and chimed in now and then with my 5c contribution to what I think it all means. As I said, woo-woo, to mean BIG ideas about complex processes and esoteric knowledge, a bit like criticism of Finnegans Wake by James Joyce. These were the wild and out-there things this young apprentice shaman pined for. Indeed, these are the conditions that led me to adopt the artist name: Fly Agaric 23 around 1995.

To give at least some idea of what I had read at this point in my life, yet not necessarily understood correctly! I’ll list a few titles: Food Of The Gods, True Hallucinations, The Invisible Landscape by McKenna, Cosmic Trigger I, II and III, Sex Drugs And Magick, Quantum Psychology by Wilson.777  and The Book Of Thoth by Aleister Crowley, The Cosmic Serpent by Jeremy Narby, I-Ching And The Genetic Code by Martin Schonberger, plus dipping my toe into Graham Hancock, Robert Bauval and even a taste of David Icke (spits over shoulder, ugh). During this time (1996-2000) I was drumming, learning to DJ with Jungle/Drum and Bass, Hip Hop, Trip Hop music, plus discovering the diverse UK underground cultural melting pot, leading to collaborating on nights and events locally.

Jump forward 16 years, after living in America for five years, attending McKenna’s Wake in San Francisco, interviewing Wilson and contributing to his biographical film: Maybe Logic, and helping to found The Maybe Logic Academy (see MaybeLogic Quarterly). I was working at the 420 Coffeeshop, Amsterdam, collaborating closely with poet John Sinclair. It’s the 19th of November, the 25th High Times Cannabis Cup  is opening.

John Sinclair And His Amsterdam Blues Scholars At The Cannabis Cup

As an unofficial, satellite performance, celebrating cannabis and hemp culture during the High Times Cup, John Sinclair And His Amsterdam Blues Scholars performed at Club Aknaton on November 19th, 2012. John Sinclair, Leslie Lopez, Esther Croez, Mark Ritsema, Vicente Pino, Rebbecca Waller and myself played two sets of reefer jazz, one with Sinclair front and center.

During the show, Steven Hager (of High Times) and Fantuzzi (Of The Fantuzzi Band) turned up, danced and fluffed-up the aura of the party. At the end, Hager stepped on stage and invited the band to join his Temple Dragon Band: the official High Times 2012 house band. Half the band accepted his offer. Rebbecca, Esther and I joined up for a week of creativity, chaos and a wild path to the Kukulkan pyramid, four weeks later.

At some point late in the week Fantuzzi asked me if I wanted to join him, to play drums at Synthesis 2012, taking place in Chichen Itza. It didn’t take me long to decide. One song I played with both The Temple Dragon Band and with Fantuzzi is called Warriors Of The Rainbow, and is his interpretation in song format, of the Hopi Prophecy.

  • From the James Joyce Quarterly (Spring 2019)

“In a welcome contrast to the seriousness of high-art venues, Steve Fly Agaric 23 embodies the ideal of a space-cadet savant, just barely returned from the realm of interstellar ideas but landing into perfect musical timing, without losing the traces of stardust from whatever cosmic forces returned to this atmosphere in his wake. A drummer and DJ-turned-programmer, Fly’s performance was based on a digital remixing palette he developed uniquely for the day, “BloomJamm,” which was available for free download by all conference attendees, and remains accessible to the general public via his website.
Fly’s audio samples included clips of Joyce-head Robert Anton Wilson, whose influence was also present in the work of the visual James Joyce Quarterly 56.3-4 2019 Complete_Issue_56_3.indb 422 1/14/2020 1:14:29 PM 423 artist Heather Ryan Kelley. Kelley sat beside the stage throughout the day creating live art. Though Kelley and Fly drew on overlap-ping sources of inspiration—Joyce’s Wake, RAW’s Coincidance, and elements of prepared materials and automatic improvisation—her temperament and approach are marked by a delicate exploration of the inner worlds and symbols of language, both as words and as sigla.

    ….

“Also departing from the Antwerp Symposium in search of unusual
adventures was “Amsterdampster,” a series of shows organized by Steve Fly Agaric 23 immediately following the performances at deSin-
gel. Each of the three Amsterdam performances was held at different locations there, including Sexyland in North Amsterdam, the Cafe Monumentje, and the Cafe Daan and Daan.

The gig at Sexyland included an explosive rant from Christian Greer on Joyce’s methods for destroying imperialism at its root, through the introduction of an anti-capitalist virus into the English/ American language via Finnegans Wake; a reprise of Bindervoet and Henkes’s performative lecture; and a set of mind-melting improvised music from Fly and Vincente Pino’s Dr. Marshmallow Cubicle. A particularly unique highlight of the evening was an impromptu offering of “Finnegan’s Wake” from the Dutch National Opera singer Cato Fordham, who first recalled discovering his brother Finn’s personal copy of Finnegans Wake strewn about somewhere, only to find himself transcendentally transported into language through its reading.

Unexpected forms of impromptu transportation also occurred at Cafe Monumentje, west of the canal in Jordaan. A real locals bar unaccustomed to performances and where English speakers are rarely found, much less welcomed, two English expats and an American—Fly, William Sutton, and myself—nervously sat in the back corner wondering how to proceed with our late afternoon gig. Emboldened by his background as a stand-up comedian, Sutton began the evening, to the relief of Fly and me. Rapping in Dutch about William Shakespeare and the power of language, Sutton dexterously transitioned to English before cuing me to talk about Joyce and read fromthe Wake.

We stumbled on Joycean gold when one of the most disinterested
regulars finally looked up from his newspaper to demand a look at what gibberish this was, and from then on, in lieu of any formal per-
formances, the entire bar spent the night cheering and shouting while passing around this weird little book. With each reader laughing
aloud until the next insisted on finding out for himself what was so
funny, the Wake proved itself again as a true pub-book-for-the-people,
while one man declared, “I’ve been at this bar every day for forty
years; we haven’t seen this kind of magic since the old days!”

  • THOUGHTS: WHERE DO THEY GO?

“If you let liars into the government, you put everybody at risk”–James O’ Brien, a few minutes ago on LBC talk radio, UK.

Whenever I’m fortunate enough to catch one of my own thoughts and follow it, I try to imagine how such a similar thought may arise in others. You can save a lot of time by working to slow the avalanche of distracting thoughts using traditional methods, follow your breath, sit still, isolate your consciousness temporarily to recharge and repair. However, a lot of people consider meditation as pass/time for snowflakes, and need further nudging and poking to begin to recognize the importance of trying to follow their thoughts and questioning where they come from and where they go? And how often are you updating that data-set?

A healthy mid/waypoint between Zen meditation and simply changing your mind about something revolves around the language that you use and how you use it. The introduction of a few modifications to a language can produce results similar to those gained from meditation, they can affect a new expanded awareness, from the individual psychological sense of self…to the ontological social-cultural sense of reality. Every time we hear, think and speak we are confronted with the paradox of Language vs. The Equation.

The symbol systems we use to communicate our message and those we leave out are worthy of meditation. Meditation, to return to the theme, or some kinds of meditation…aim to reach beyond language and bridge the ideological gaps, to move towards experiencing things as they actually are: perpetually changing, decentralized, incomprehensible. And invoking compassion to fill the holes of what cannot be known.

“Language is a virus from outer space.”–William S. Burroughs.

In all seriousness and sincerity, we should all spend a moment to meditate on Coronavirus and where possible, try to follow our thoughts, our hopes and our fears. Try to track them to where they originate, where is the source of those thoughts and where are those thoughts going to…and now? This process of self-analysis and listening to your own head and heart, once in touch with your own mind-body system, can be shifted to cast judgement on others or external signals from…out there. Hopefully with compassion due to understanding the process you’ve just been through, like solidarity, not a choice but duty when faced with the incomprehensible, the uncertain and the indeterminate of a global pandemic turning endemic. We must search for that common ground between all human beings, such as to wish them a happy healthy life, for example. Wish well, wish hard, wish often. Practice practice practice.

The global coronavirus brings complexity and chaos to the existing complexity/chaos/disorder inherent in subject-object duality, underlying most division and confusion around the world, the roots of disinformation? To repeat, never give up trying to understand that which you currently do not, experiment, research, measure, study, and in equal measure…both on yourself and on others…the internal and external infinite flux of beingness. Man, and women, is the measure of all things, somebody else said.

To conclude: If you want to fight for your future and live in a healthy, well-informed community of self-owning ones, consider starting by following your own thoughts, where do they come from, where do they go? Then if your feeling brave, begin to use the same logic and reason, the same thought tools to break down the news headlines and the gossip down the pub and the WHO guidelines and each and every message communicated down to the very last pixel, or phoneme.

“Free your mind and your ass will follow…”–Funkadelic.

    Thanks for reading, stay safe.
    Love all the people!
